The name obligates

Our history is undeniable connected to N.F.S. Grundtvig. We are standing on the shoulders of his ideas about information and freedom – And we are not a second in doubt that he is resting peacefully in his grave knowing we are running his folk high school the way he intended.

The first idea of Grundtvigs folk high school was in 1853 when Grundtvig turned 70 years old. He was given a larger amount of money which he used to build the first Grundtvigs Folk high school. The school was named Marielyst after his second wife Marie Toft and was located at Nørrebro in Copenhagen.

The school got its current location in Hillerød and the name “Grundtvigs Højskole” when Grundtvigs folk high school was merged with Frederiksborg Højskole.

We engage

At the folks high school you are able to evolve in a safe space. But we are also aware and take part in the community outside the school and leave an impact on the political agenda.

Every week we invite the outside indoor where lectures and professionals talk about politics, art, photography, literature, the world outside, mental health and a lot more that and much more that moves in society.

We also host concerts or go to other cities and attend cultural events.

We are taking responsibility

At Grundtvigs we believe in a united responsibility – both on a personal l and global level.

We have installed solar panels, and our kitchen staff is passionated about bringing down the food waste and make climate friendly food.

Right now, 30-60% of our food is organic.

We have also decided not to fly when we go on studie trips, therefore we are always traveling with bus or train.
